For our next Florida road trip, we decided to go see the 2nd largest
man made lake in the USA, Lake Okeechobee. On the way we had to pass
through Bartow and were very surpised to see what was happening in
this small town.
Who would have thought Bartow, Florida had
an annual Syfy street festival complete with cosplay, vendors
tables, food and a car show of scifi vehicles? Found it by accident
when driving around today. What a blast.
We stopped off to see Highlands Hummock State Park. I have walked on
a lot of swamp boardwalks in Florida. But never one that was only 2
feet wide with a single handrail!
Lake Okeechobee the second largest fresh water lake in America.
Can't see the other side. Who knew that in the 1930's they built a
dyke 35 feet high around the entire lake 107 miles long because a
cat 5 hurricane drowned 3000 people with flooding.
This is a lock for boats to get through the dyke into the canal
that goes to Atlantic Ocean.
In these here parts of Florida there's no need for a dock. Just pull
ya boat up to the river bank and tie it to a tree!
Went on a fantastic airboat ride today. The captain took no
prisoners!
Went to see Solomon's castle thinking a cheesy road side attraction
that was literally in the middle of nowhere central FL miles from
any town.
Surprised to see over 100 people taking tours and
eating lunch in a huge restaurant! Great food and a good experience
seeing this guy's crazy artwork. He built castle by hand on his own
using aluminum printing plates.
