THE ROAD TO MONTANA  - DAY FOUR

We were greeted this morning by a visitor in our yard. He came walking up the driveway!

It is time to put Canada behind us for now and head south to Glacier National Park in Montana.

It's not a long drive - about 3 hours, but we made it a lot longer by taking a circle route and back roads. Took us over 7 hours!

Here's some things we saw along the way...

This is a worker with the Canadian Railway system.

Note the contraption on the front (and back) of his truck that allows him to drive the truck onto a railway line and drive out via rail to make repairs in the field.

Of course we had to go through the border post. They were very friendly.

But this is the line we had to wait in, about 45 minutes. Being a Friday of a long weekend (in Canada) it was busy!

Once over the border we headed over to Lake Kucanusa and followed the lake down to Libby before circling back to our new base in Whitefish. You could immediately tell we were back in the United States - strip malls and restaurant chains abound.

But it was a beautiful drive with stunning views.

Montana has very high speed limits. 70mph on secondary 2 lane roads which is crazy on those twisting narrow mountain roads with sheer drops into the lake. I barely got over 45mph!!

As you can see from the above pictures there is still quite a bit of smoke in the air as there are also fires in Montana.

We were standing outside our car on a lookout point when one of the fire fighting helicopters came by.

We waved and they honked their horn back at us. Pretty cool!

The air cleared substantially once we started heading East away from the fires.

And here is our new home for the next 5 days. Air BnB just outside Whitefish on a dog farm.

Tomorrow bright and early we head to Glacier National Park.  This has been a dream of Wendy's since she was little so she is beyond excited.  The fact we can actually breathe the air and see the mountains makes this journey even more anticipated!

And finally...

Reminder to self.... STAY IN THE CAR!

Wonder who's "TA TA's" they were thinking of when they named this town.  We're thinking it's a population of 2?
